Once upon a time there was my love for the Wadi Rum desert!
In love with the desert since my first trip in 2010, I decided to come and spend several months alone in the desert before coming to settle there permanently in 2012. Real love at first sight for this desert and not another!
As soon as I arrived, I remember having chills so much I was impressed and captivated by the beauty of these landscapes, I was as if seized and I knew that here it was already at home, a unique feeling like coming home while visiting this place for the first time in my life!
Did I live there before? All I knew was that this trip was answering a call!
At that time, this region of the Middle East was experiencing wars all around, Syria, the Arab Spring in Egypt, Iraq, the tensions with Israel and the terror of the Islamist state that was raging. Even if Jordan was spared, the threats were palpable, how many times I went to the desert without seeing a single tourist. Even most Bedouins had deserted their desert because of the cessation of tourist activity as in the more recent time of Covid.
Almost 2 years had passed without Wadi Rum being able to see its first tourists coming back. This time was very marked by the instability of the countries bordering Jordan, and seen from Europe, the media treatment did not help to appease the situation, how many times have I been able to hear why you stay there?
Well, the only unique reason is this love for the Desert that has never left me and that animates me until today as on the 1st day. Not a single day goes by in my life without me thanking heaven for making this choice. From the day of my final departure for Jordan, I was leaving with 2 suitcases for the unknown, I knew that I was leaving for a new life without knowing where I will go. Even if I knew that the desert was there to welcome me.
I had left everything in France and I really didn’t know where I was landing. It was a time when Wadi Rum desert was still very preserved, few people knew Jordan and even less Wadi Rum Desert. Apart from travelers in search of adventure, very few Bedouin camps existed, the desert was pure, the Bedouins simply lived, had old jeeps and a lot of sun in their hearts. It was a totally different context and I was quickly adopted by the village hence my nickname Jemila.
Everyone knew my love very strong for the desert, during the first months of my installation I stayed to live 6 months in the desert. When I understood that a house in the village became necessary. And since the whole tribe lived in the village of Rum, in terms of logistics it was difficult to get supplies.
Between comings and goings between the desert and the village plus the need to be more accessible to my family, I ended up sedentary like the Bedouins and built my little house in the village on the land of a Bedouin family with whom I agreed to create a camp in partnership in the desert.
During all these years of development of tourist activity, I personally lived reclusive in the desert with my dogs taking advantage of my days to walk and contemplate these incredible spaces of beauty.
My love for the desert was so great, that I could not leave it and I was far from business considerations, for me the desert was above all an inner meeting and it took me a long time to realize that this love for the desert, I could also share it.
So it’s very late and thanks to the arrival of my niece (Morgane) who came to join me in Jordan for love for her aunt 😉 (another beautiful story…!) That we decided together to open our own website in 2021 to offer travelers an authentic desert experience!
My niece very sensitive to my approach and my pure love for the desert also brought her personal touch, that of welcoming our tourists with her joy and legendary good humor. Difficult in his company not to smile or have moments of frank laughter..!! She can, if needed accompany you when on tour.
Our tourists have the choice to sleep in our simple Bedouin camp located in a peaceful and magical secluded place! Or to bivouac under the stars in exceptional places and always with caring guides to bring the best of themselves to offer a unique and unforgettable experience!
