What does “sleeping under the stars” mean in Wadi Rum?

This is probably one of the most unforgettable experiences you will ever have in the desert!

Far from all light pollution, it’s just you, your guide, the desert silence, and the stars in a remote area far from any other camps.
If you’re feeling adventurous and want to experience something more authentic, this is the one to book !!!

Protected close to the mountain, the spot is chosen according to the weather of the day and the season.

How the evening typically happens

Late afternoon

After your last site, your guide will take you directly to the spot for the night. It will be a cave or a spot right at the center of the protected area of Wadi Rum. It is chosen according to the season and the weather. We do have our favorite spots, but they can change according to the moment.

Sunset

Once you park the car, your guide will invite you to go watch the sunset. This is a moment to enjoy the quietness of the desert and enjoy the sky, the sand and the mountains changing colors. The spot will be reachable and easy to access from the cave.

Dinner

Your guide will start preparing the dinner on the fire and settling the place for the evening. You will enjoy a delicious meal with our good bedouin tea. And it will be a moment of sharing stories and asking questions. Feel free to ask anything. The bedouins love sharing their culture and stories about their childhood in the desert!

Night

Once you're done with dinner, you will be able to enjoy the most beautiful show : our starry sky!! Stargazing is the best moment when in the desert. In summer time you will be able to enjoy the Milky Way earlier than in winter time. But if the moon shows up, you will have one of the most beautiful shows!!!!

Morning

After a good night of sleep, you will be able to enjoy the sunrise. Most of the caves will be close to a sunrise spot, reachable by foot. (It also depend on the season and the weather) Your guide will also prepare your breakfast and you will head back to the village around 8:30/9

Best time for the stars

In Jordan the weather is very nice most of the year.  However, it is true that there are better months to come and visit the country.  You have many possibilities : spring & autumn, summer or winter. But when is the best time ?

  • Spring & Autumn :
To enjoy the most of Wadi Rum, we do recommend coming in these periods. Not only days are longer and you can see more of Wadi Rum, but also nights are cooler and you will start feeling more comfortable to enjoy the stars.
  • Summer :
In summer time, days are really hot, but the nights are perfect to admire the Milky Way that appears really early at night. For the day we make sure it is not to hot for you with a protection at the back of the jeep. As for the night, max 2h after the sun sets, you will start seeing many stars and if you are lucky you will be able to spot shooting stars
  • Winter :
This is the season where the nights are the longest and you can enjoy the stars the most. But the nights in winter are the coldest. We have the equipment needed, but expect cold temperatures that can go close to 0.

What to pack

For you to feel the most comfortable, we recommend bringing the following :

  • headlamp
  • toilet bags with essentials thing for your night of sleep
  • power bank to charge your phones, even if your guide can let you charge your phone in his car if needed.
  • wam clothes no matter the seasons ( as it can always be a bit windy at night )
  • Scarf / hat / Keffiyeh + sunglasses + sunscreen to protect your self from the sun.

What can we wear & bring to Wadi Rum?

---

Toilets, phone signal & safety

Toilet

In the desert, when sleeping under the stars, there won't be any bathroom. Meaning no toilets nor showers will be at your disposal.  As they say here, the bathroom is behind a rock or a tree.  We recommend having a plastic bag with you and a lighter if you want to burn your paper.  As for the shower, if you want to clean yourself, our guides always have jerricans full of water. You can ask them to give you some water.

Phone Signal

Once you are on the way to the desert, you will get some connection for 20 min and then you will have nothing until you get back to the car. Therefor, we recommend sending messages to your family to let them know you are doing well. It will be the time to disconnect and appreciate the nature around you and the quietness of the desert.

Safety

Coming to Wadi Rum and sleeping in the desert is safe. However, in summer time we provide mosquito tent to protect you form any animals. It is a season where scorpions and snakes come out. But be sure that we would never let you sleep in a place where there is any danger. Most of these animals run away from men. And your guide will always make sure

For your peace of mind this tent is the best. Not only does it protects you, but you will be able to admire the stars and still feel the wind.

Is there a toilet during the night ?

A real toilet no, the bathroom is the nature. Make sure to have what is needed.

Do you provide sleeping bags / blankets ?

Yes, no matter the season we provide all the equipment for the night. But feel free to bring your sleeping bag if you feel more comfotbale.

How cold does it get at night ?

In winter time, it is pretty cold. But we provide heavy blankets and sleeping bags for the night. You will be protected in the cave and the fire will  keep you warm. For sure, the best moments to enjoy the nights are from spring time to autumn where nights aren’t too cold.

Can I do it in winter ?

Yes, we’ve had travelers doing it in winter time. But it all depends on you. If you prefer sleeping in the camp in the cold periods that is also possible.

When is the best time to see the Milky Way ?

Definitely in summer time. By the time you finish your dinner the Milky Way, will start appearing slowly. The lucky ones who will come when. there is barely any moon, will have the most beautiful show.
